Majestic Monaco

The principality evokes images of sun kissed luxury and a playground of the rich and famous, but how do you spend a day in Monaco?

The world’s second smallest country is fast becoming a popular stop on Mediterranean cruises; with passengers hoping to soak in the glamour and majesty of this stunning destination. As you disembark your ship it does feel like you are stepping into the scene of a James Bond movie; the Port of Monaco offers a grand and unforgettable panorama, luxury yachts jouncing in the harbour and palaces grasping on to the rocky backdrop.

There is an array of options when exploring Monaco and if you prefer, you can venture further afield, with many cruise excursions taking in the sophistication of nearby Nice; however if you want to enjoy the mix of ancient and ultra-modern architecture of Monaco, here are my suggestions:

1) A walking tour of Monaco

Monaco is in its entirety is 200 hectares so it is very feasible for you to explore the sights under your own steam and on foot. A must is glancing inside Monte Carlo’s legendary marble-and-gold casino. The building, open to visitors every morning from 9.00am, is Europe’s most lavish example of belle-époque architecture. You cannot fail to be swept away by its grandness, imagining the roulette spinning and blackjack games being dramatically won and lost. Taking a stroll along the harbour; you cannot help but be seduced by the sheer beauty, glamour and grandness of the yachts moored in the crystal clear azure water. Take the opportunity to imagine life aboard and who knows, perhaps following a trip to the casino, one could be yours!

2) Collection de Voitures Anciennes

A must for motor enthusiasts, since the early 1950s, passionate about cars, the Prince Rainier amassed an impressive array of classic automobiles, which he opened to the public in 1993. His haul includes various Ferraris, Maseratis, Lamborghinis, Rolls Royces and several F1 and rally cars, as well as quirky items like the Lexus which carried the current Prince to his wedding in 2011. The museum itself is similar to an exhibition hall, but will move to its new purpose-built home by the harbour when it’s completed in 2019. Whilst on the topic of motoring, any Formula 1 fan will absolutely be exhilarated to walk along the famous streets of the Monaco Grand Prix, taking in the infamous tunnel and numerous chicanes.

3) A visit to the Musée Océanographique de Monaco,

Stuck dramatically to the edge of a cliff since 1910, and founded by Prince Albert I (1848–1922), it is stunning. The centrepiece of Musée Océanographique de Monaco, is its aquarium with a 6m-deep lagoon where sharks and marine predators are separated from colourful tropical fishes by a coral reef. Upstairs, two huge colonnaded rooms retrace the history of oceanography and marine biology through photographs, old equipment, numerous specimens and interactive displays.

4) Le Rocher

Monaco Ville, also called Le Rocher, is the only part of Monaco to have retained its original old town, complete with quaint and meandering medieval lanes. Thrusting out of the rock-face, the old town has mesmerising views of the Mediterranean Sea below, as a visitor, you can appreciate its strategic location for the Grimaldi dynasty. There are various staircases up to Le Rocher; the best route up is via Rampe Major, which starts from place aux Armes near the port. On your way up, look out for the statue of the late Prince Rainier looking down on his beloved Monaco. Le Rocher is a juxtaposition to the sleekness of expensive yachts and modern architecture below and this is its charm; your ascent will be rewarded by amazing views and unrivalled serenity – make sure you have your camera to hand!

5) Enchanting Nice

Nice is on 20 kilometres away from Monaco and most cruise lines offer passengers an opportunity to visit this most beautiful place. Nice seduces its visitors; considered by most as the unofficial capital of the Cote D’Azure with its fabulous markets, an enticing old town, glorious architecture and a wealth of gastronomical delights. There are many options for you in Nice, perhaps a gentle meander through the historic Old Town, admire the seafront Promenade des Anglais, explore the colourful Cours Saleya flower market and enjoy panoramic views from Castle Hill. If you are feeling energetic you could hop aboard a Segway!

Monaco, a truly sumptuous place and a highlight on any Mediterranean cruise; from the exotic jardins affording you the opportunity to experience a piece of paradise whilst enjoying a moment of quiet contemplation to the bustling avenues with their chic cafes and exquisite boutiques, it is a destination you could visit time and time again.
